Kex Hostel on Skúlagata is the best bar in Reykjavik. A former biscuit factory on the old harbour, converted into a hostel, bar, restaurant, and music venue. The live music programme is the best in Iceland — local bands, touring musicians, and the occasional impromptu session that goes until 3am. The Brennivín is served cold, with dried fish on the side.

BRENNIVÍN & DRIED FISH

Brennivín — Iceland's national spirit, a caraway-flavoured aquavit — is served cold at Kex, with a side of dried fish (harðfiskur). This is how Icelanders drink it. The combination is extraordinary: the anise and caraway of the Brennivín against the umami of the dried fish. It's an acquired taste that Gerald acquired immediately.

THE SPACE

Kex is a beautiful space — exposed concrete, industrial fittings, and the bones of the old biscuit factory visible throughout. The bar opens onto a terrace overlooking the old harbour; on clear nights, the Northern Lights are visible from the terrace.
